Plain-language definition
A passport acceptance facility is a post office, clerk of court, public library, or other authorized location that checks and accepts certain in-person passport applications for the Department of State.
What the facility does
- Accepts new adult and child applications that use Form DS-11.
- Reviews the application package, witnesses the signature, and sends the package for Department of State processing.
- May offer routine or expedited service and may provide photo services.
- Charges the required execution or acceptance fee for applicable applications.
What it does not do
- It does not issue the passport or decide the application.
- It generally does not accept DS-82 renewal or correction applications.
- It is not the same as a passport agency or center for urgent travel.
Appointments and local rules
Some facilities require appointments, have limited hours, or accept only certain payment methods. Use the official locator and contact the selected facility before traveling there.
Example
A first-time adult applicant may complete Form DS-11, gather citizenship evidence, identification, photocopies, a photo, and fees, then take the package to a nearby acceptance facility. The facility sends it to Passport Services for adjudication.
