The photo must be in color, taken within the last six months, and reflect the applicant’s current appearance. Filters, artificial retouching, background replacement, and other digital changes can cause a delay.
Printed photo checklist
- Submit one color photo printed on matte or glossy photo-quality paper.
- The finished photo must measure 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm).
- The head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 1 inch and 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm).
- Use a plain white or off-white background without shadows, texture, or objects.
- Center the head and shoulders and face the camera directly.
- Use a neutral expression with both eyes open and the mouth closed.
- Do not submit a damaged, blurred, pixelated, scanned, or digitally altered image.
Glasses, head coverings, and clothing
Remove eyeglasses for the photo unless a doctor has documented a rare medical reason that prevents removal. Head coverings may be permitted for a recognized religious practice or documented medical purpose, but they cannot obscure facial features or cast shadows. Wear normal daily clothing rather than a uniform, except religious clothing worn every day.
Photos for babies and young children
Only the child may appear in the photo. Do not show a parent’s hand, chair back, toy, or pacifier. The Department of State provides examples for positioning a baby on a plain white or off-white surface. Review the current examples because age-appropriate expression allowances do not remove the requirements for a clear, current image.
Digital photo for online renewal
- Upload the original color image rather than a scan of a printed photograph.
- Use a supported file type and file size listed by the online renewal system.
- Keep the image square and leave enough space around the head for the official crop tool.
- Do not reuse the exact photo from the passport being renewed.
- Review the preview carefully before submitting.
Before paying or filing
- Compare the image with the official acceptable and unacceptable examples.
- Confirm the photo was taken within six months.
- Measure a printed photo and head size rather than relying on the retailer’s label.
- Write nothing on the front and do not staple through the face area.
- Attach or upload the photo exactly as the current form or online system instructs.
Passport Services may place an application on hold and request a new photograph. Respond through the channel and deadline stated in the official letter or email.
