VA Board Appeal preparation checklist

Use this checklist before requesting review by the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. It helps prevent a missed issue, wrong docket, expired deadline, or evidence sent outside the permitted window.

The decision letter is the starting document

Do not select a docket or copy a deadline from a general article before reading the review rights attached to the actual VA decision.

1. Record the deadline

  • Write the date on the VA decision letter.
  • Confirm the ordinary one-year deadline for the eligible decision.
  • Check whether it is a contested claim or another case with a shorter period.
  • Allow time for submission and keep proof that VA received or accepted the appeal.

2. Separate the issues

  • List each condition, rating, effective date, dependency issue, or other determination.
  • Copy the description and decision date accurately.
  • Decide which issues you want the Board to review.
  • Use separate Form 10182 submissions if issues require different dockets.

3. Choose the docket before preparing evidence

  • Direct Review: no hearing and no new evidence.
  • Evidence Submission: evidence with the appeal or within 90 days after receipt.
  • Hearing: testimony and evidence at the hearing or within the next 90 days.

4. Download the current Form 10182

  • Use VA.gov and confirm the form revision. The current page lists June 2026.
  • Complete all identifying information requested.
  • Choose exactly one Board review option on each form.
  • List every appealed issue and its decision date.
  • Sign and date the paper form.

5. Build the permitted record

  • Do not add new evidence to Direct Review.
  • For Evidence Submission, label and send each item within the 90-day window.
  • For Hearing, organize testimony and any evidence for the hearing or the following 90 days.
  • Keep a list of every attachment and the date submitted.

6. Consider the new June 2026 form option

The revised Form 10182 contains a checkbox allowing an appellant to ask the Board not to wait for the period to request a docket change before issuing a decision when the appeal is otherwise ready. Read the current instructions carefully before selecting it because a decision ends the ability to switch the Board review option.

7. Submit through an official route

  • Use the VA.gov Board Appeal tool when available for the decision.
  • For paper filing, use the current Board mailing instructions.
  • Keep the confirmation, tracking record, fax receipt, or date-stamped copy.
  • Do not email medical records to an address that is not an authorized filing channel.

8. Plan for the waiting period

  • Monitor status through VA.gov.
  • Keep address, email, and telephone information current.
  • Respond to Board correspondence.
  • If you requested a hearing, prepare technology, travel, representation, and evidence timing.

9. Review the Board decision promptly

  • Identify each granted, denied, or remanded issue.
  • Follow remand instructions and monitor the agency’s later action.
  • For a denied issue, compare a Supplemental Claim with an appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.
  • Remember that the court deadline is generally 120 days from the Board decision letter.
