Social Security accepts online Medicare applications for many people age 65 or older. Part B-only enrollment and special situations may use a different online flow or CMS forms.
Steps
- Confirm whether you are already enrolled automatically.
- Identify your Initial, Special, or General Enrollment Period.
- Decide whether to enroll in Part A, Part B, or both.
- Apply through Social Security online, by appointment, or through the applicable Part B process.
- Save your confirmation and review the enrollment notice and effective date.
Part B after employer coverage
If you delayed Part B because of current-employment group health coverage, Social Security may request Form CMS-40B and evidence of employment coverage using Form CMS-L564. The online Part B Special Enrollment Period application may collect this information electronically.
Railroad beneficiaries
Contact the Railroad Retirement Board rather than using the standard Social Security route when it administers your benefits.
