The QMB, SLMB, and QI programs can pay the Medicare Part B premium. The QDWI program is different: it helps eligible working people with disabilities pay the Part A premium.
What each category can pay
- QMB: may pay Part A and Part B premiums and Medicare deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments covered by the program.
- SLMB: pays the Part B premium.
- QI: pays the Part B premium; you must apply again each year, and state funding rules apply.
- QDWI: pays the Part A premium for eligible people, not the Part B premium.
Your state makes the decision
Apply through the Medicaid or medical-assistance agency for the jurisdiction where you live. Federal limits are updated annually, and some states use more generous rules or exclude certain income or resources. A national example cannot determine your individual eligibility.
QMB has additional billing protection
If you are enrolled in QMB, Medicare providers are not allowed to bill you for Medicare-covered deductibles, coinsurance, or copayments, although a small Medicaid copayment may apply in some circumstances. Keep the state eligibility notice and show the coverage information when receiving care.
How to apply
Use the official state or territory contact and submit the application requested there. Keep the confirmation and read the notice to see which category was approved. Help with a Part B premium does not necessarily mean that you receive full Medicaid benefits.
