What the authorized person needs
Provide written permission to the Post Office holding the mail. Identify the person you authorize and sign the permission. The authorized person must present an acceptable form of identification when collecting the mail.
Confirm the pickup location
Use the Post Office locator from the Hold Mail request and select the Hold Mail pickup service. Do not assume that the nearest retail location holds the mail. The request confirmation and local Post Office can resolve a location question.
What happens after early pickup
If anyone authorized to collect the accumulated mail picks it up before the scheduled end date, USPS cancels the hold and regular delivery resumes on the next Postal business day. Coordinate before pickup so household members know that delivery will restart.
Do not confuse the services
USPS Hold Mail covers all mail for an eligible address. A single package held after a delivery attempt, Hold for Pickup, and accountable mail can have different authorization, notice, identification, and return rules. Follow the notice attached to that item when it is not part of an address-wide Hold Mail request.
