Not every claimant needs an exam
VA schedules a compensation and pension exam only when it needs more information to decide service connection or the severity of a condition. If the file contains enough acceptable medical evidence, VA may review the records instead under its Acceptable Clinical Evidence process.
You cannot schedule the first appointment yourself
VA, a VA medical center, or an authorized contractor starts the scheduling process. Keep your mailing address, telephone number, and email current, and confirm the appointment using the contact information in the notice.
Ask to reschedule promptly when necessary
VA advises contacting the medical center or contractor at least 48 hours in advance when possible. A change can delay the claim, and contractor rescheduling rules may be limited. Use the number on the appointment letter.
If you miss the exam
Missing the appointment can delay the claim. VA may decide from the existing evidence, which can affect the outcome. If you had a reason VA may consider good cause, explain it promptly through an official channel and request a new appointment.
What the exam is—and is not
The exam gathers information for the benefits decision. It is not a treatment appointment, and the examiner does not decide the claim. The provider may review records, ask questions from a Disability Benefits Questionnaire, perform an examination, or request tests.
Prepare without exaggerating or minimizing
- Review the conditions claimed and describe symptoms, frequency, severity, flare-ups, and functional effects accurately.
- Submit new private medical records before the appointment through the claim-status tool, an accredited representative, or another approved route.
- Arrive on time and bring identification requested in the notice.
- Request necessary accommodations when confirming the appointment.
