Tax account transcript

An IRS tax account transcript shows basic data for one tax year, including filing status, taxable income, payment types, and changes recorded after the original return was filed.

How it differs from a return transcript

A tax return transcript shows most line items from the original Form 1040-series return and generally does not show later changes. A tax account transcript focuses on account activity and does show later changes. A record of account transcript combines both types.

What it does not prove

It is not a photocopy of the filed return. It also may not show the most recent penalties, interest, changes, or pending actions, so it should not be treated as a final clearance from the IRS.

Example

A person who amended a return may use the tax account transcript to look for the later adjustment. A lender asking for original return line items may instead request a tax return transcript. The requesting organization decides which document it accepts.

How to obtain it

Individuals can download available transcripts through the IRS Individual Online Account. The IRS also offers eligible tax return and tax account transcripts by mail or automated phone, and Form 4506-T can request transcript types and years covered by that form.
