Do I need a tax transcript or a copy of my tax return?

A free transcript is enough for many verification needs; request a full copy only when the recipient specifically requires the original return and attachments.

Most verification requests need a transcript, not a full copy

A transcript is free and summarizes IRS records. A copy reproduces the filed return and attachments and requires Form 4506 and the current fee.

Use a transcript when

You need income verification, adjusted gross income, account activity, wage information, proof that no return was filed, or data for preparing or amending a return. Confirm the required transcript type with the recipient.

Use a copy when

The recipient specifically requires an actual copy of the original return and attachments, or the information needed is not shown on an available transcript. Use Form 4506 and review the current processing fee and availability period.

Do not assume the tax return transcript shows later changes

A tax return transcript generally reflects the original return. A tax account transcript shows later account changes, while a record of account combines return and account information.
