Checklist after applying for Social Security retirement benefits

Keep the filing confirmation, monitor the claim, respond to requests, and verify the award details before relying on the first payment.

Immediately after submission

  • Save the confirmation number, filing date, selected benefit-start month, and a copy or summary of the answers.
  • Keep the contact information used in the application active.
  • Do not submit a duplicate application unless SSA instructs you to do so.

Check the application status

  • Use your personal my Social Security account to see where the application is in the process.
  • If online status is unavailable, use SSA’s official telephone or local-office options.
  • Record any reference number and the date of each contact.

Respond to SSA requests

  • Read every notice and identify the exact document, signature, or clarification requested.
  • Use the secure upload or submission method specified by SSA.
  • Keep proof of transmission and do not mail original identity documents unless the instructions expressly require it.

Verify the benefit start and first payment

  • Confirm the month in which entitlement begins. The first retirement payment generally arrives in the month after the month selected for benefits.
  • Review the payment schedule because the deposit day can depend on the beneficiary’s record and birthday.
  • Do not treat an online estimate as the final award amount.

Review the award notice

  • Check the monthly gross amount, any retroactive amount, the effective date, deductions, and direct-deposit information.
  • Confirm whether benefits for a spouse, child, or another family member require a separate action.
  • If information is wrong, follow the contact or appeal deadline printed in the notice.

Coordinate Medicare and deductions

  • Confirm whether Medicare Part B premiums will be deducted and how any delayed enrollment or employer coverage affects the case.
  • Review voluntary federal tax withholding if appropriate.
  • Keep enough funds available for premiums when benefits are delayed, withdrawn, or voluntarily suspended.

Report work and personal changes

  • Before full retirement age, report material changes in expected wages or self-employment earnings.
  • Report address, direct deposit, marital status, pension, or other changes required by SSA.
  • Keep copies of reports to reduce overpayment disputes.

After payments begin

  • Compare the deposit with the award notice and save benefit verification documents.
  • Check the annual SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S when issued.
  • Revisit the claim if you are considering withdrawal within the allowed period or voluntary suspension after full retirement age.
