Form 1040-X amended return checklist

Use this checklist to organize a federal individual amended return. It does not calculate tax or determine whether a special refund limitation, election, carryback, notice, or court deadline applies.

Use the tax-year rules

The current Form 1040-X is a continuous-use form, but the corrected income, deductions, credits, schedules, and eligibility rules come from the year being amended.

1. Confirm the correction

  • Original federal return was filed.
  • Substantive change identified: filing status, income, deduction, credit, dependent, payment, or tax liability.
  • Math-only error or missing attachment checked against any IRS letter before amending.
  • Form 843, Form 8379, an audit response, an appeal, or another process ruled out when appropriate.

2. Protect every deadline

  • Tax year and original filing date recorded.
  • Tax payment dates recorded.
  • General three-year/two-year refund rule checked.
  • Disaster, combat-zone, carryback, foreign-tax-credit, bad-debt, or other special period reviewed.
  • All notice, appeal, collection, and court deadlines calendared separately.

3. Gather the tax-year file

  • Complete copy of the filed return.
  • IRS account adjustments and notices.
  • Forms W-2, 1099, K-1, or other information documents, including corrected versions.
  • Forms, schedules, instructions, and worksheets for the year being amended.
  • Records supporting each changed item.

4. Download the current materials

  • Form 1040-X, revision December 2025, downloaded from IRS.gov.
  • Instructions for Form 1040-X, revision December 2025, reviewed.
  • Corrected Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR prepared for the tax year.
  • New or changed forms and schedules prepared.
  • Post-release IRS changes checked before filing.

5. Recompute the return

  • Original or previously adjusted amounts entered correctly.
  • Net change calculated for each affected line.
  • Corrected amount calculated.
  • Related credits, taxes, payments, and refund or balance due recomputed.
  • State or territory consequences identified separately.

6. Explain and support each change

  • Part II explanation identifies each changed item.
  • Reason and tax-year line or schedule stated.
  • Corrected information documents attached when required.
  • Supporting copies are readable and organized.
  • No original records included unless specifically requested.

7. Choose the authorized filing method

  • Electronic eligibility confirmed for the current or two prior tax periods.
  • Software supports the specific return and attachments.
  • Three-accepted-amendments e-file limit checked when relevant.
  • Paper address confirmed from current instructions or the controlling IRS notice.
  • Separate paper envelope prepared for each tax year.

8. Sign and pay

  • Taxpayer signature completed.
  • Both spouses signed an amended joint paper return when required.
  • Current IP PIN entered when applicable.
  • Additional tax payment identified with the correct year.
  • Payment plan reviewed if full payment is not possible.

9. Keep and track

  • Complete copy of Form 1040-X and all attachments saved.
  • E-file acceptance, certified-mail record, or other filing proof saved.
  • Status check scheduled for about three weeks after filing.
  • Current 8-to-12-week processing estimate treated as an estimate, with up to 16 weeks possible.
  • State or territory amended return filed separately when required.
