Confirm the recipient's exact requirement first

- Transcript type required.
- Tax form and tax year or period.
- Deadline and accepted delivery method.
2. Prepare identity and return details
- Name shown on the return.
- Social Security number or ITIN.
- Current address and address used on the return.
- Spouse information for a joint return when required.
3. Select the channel
- IRS Individual Online Account for immediate viewing of available records.
- Mail or automated phone service for eligible return or account transcripts.
- Form 4506-T for other types, older years, or special delivery requests.
- Form 4506 only when an actual copy of the return is required.
4. After requesting
- Save the confirmation and a copy of any signed form.
- Track the expected delivery window.
- Check the transcript type, taxpayer name, and year before sending it.
- Transmit it securely because it contains sensitive financial information.
