Naturalization application and Form N-400 checklist

Collect the complete history before starting Form N-400. The most serious filing problems often come from missing trips, inconsistent dates, or incomplete answers—not from missing a routine photocopy.

Keep one master timeline

Create a single dated record of residence, travel, work, school, family changes, and legal events. Use it to keep the form, evidence, tax records, and interview answers consistent.

Eligibility basis

  • Five-year permanent-resident route, three-year qualifying-spouse route, military route, or another provision.
  • Date lawful permanent residence began.
  • Earliest filing date calculated with the USCIS tool.
  • Three-month residence in the relevant state or USCIS district.
  • Possible exceptions to English or civics testing and any disability accommodation or Form N-648 issue.

Identity and immigration records

  • Permanent Resident Card, front and back.
  • Current and expired passports and travel documents covering the required period.
  • A-Number, USCIS online account number, and prior USCIS receipt notices.
  • Legal name-change records and every other name used.
  • Immigration court, removal, rescission, or prior application records when applicable.

Residence, work, school, and travel

  • Complete address history with move-in and move-out dates.
  • Employment and school history with dates and locations.
  • Every trip outside the United States, including short trips.
  • Departure and return dates, destinations, and total days outside.
  • Evidence explaining lengthy absences when relevant.

Family and qualifying-spouse evidence

  • Current and prior marriage certificates, divorce decrees, annulments, or death certificates.
  • Spouse's proof of U.S. citizenship and citizenship date when using the three-year rule.
  • Evidence of marital union for the required period.
  • Information about children and child-support obligations.
  • Proof that prior marriages were legally terminated.

Taxes and financial obligations

  • Federal, state, and local tax filing records for the relevant years.
  • IRS tax transcripts when useful or required by the circumstances.
  • Payment agreement and proof of compliance for unpaid taxes.
  • Child support, alimony, or other court-ordered payment records.

Selective Service and military information

  • Selective Service registration number or status information when applicable.
  • Status Information Letter and explanation if registration was required but did not occur.
  • Military service, discharge, court-martial, and related records when relevant.

Arrests, citations, and court records

  • Certified arrest reports and court dispositions when required.
  • Sentencing, probation, parole, diversion, expungement, and completion records.
  • Traffic incidents if the N-400 instructions require documentation for the particular outcome.
  • Records from outside the United States and certified translations.

Do not assume an expunged, sealed, dismissed, or old matter can be omitted. Review the current form questions and seek qualified legal advice when the history may affect eligibility.

Filing package

  • Accepted Form N-400 edition or completed online application.
  • Required photographs only when the current instructions call for them.
  • Evidence matched to the eligibility basis and answers.
  • Certified English translations for foreign-language documents.
  • Current fee, reduced-fee request, or fee-waiver package.
  • Signature, correct filing channel, trackable delivery, and complete copy.

Interview and test preparation

  • Original documents listed in the interview notice.
  • Updated travel, address, employment, family, and legal information since filing.
  • Correct civics test materials based on whether N-400 was filed before or on/after October 20, 2025.
  • English test preparation unless an age-and-residence exception or approved medical exception applies.
  • Interpreter or accommodation arrangements only when permitted or approved.
