USCIS can change fees, addresses, accepted editions, and filing instructions. As reviewed July 31, 2026, the Form I-90 page lists edition 01/20/25. Recheck before submitting.
1. Confirm that I-90 is the correct form
Use I-90 for the replacement or renewal reasons listed by USCIS. Do not use it merely to renew a two-year conditional card. If the card is conditional, identify whether Form I-751 or Form I-829 is required to remove conditions.
2. Select one accurate filing reason
The reason can change the documents and fee. Common categories include expiration, loss or theft, damage, non-delivery, incorrect card data, legal name or biographic change, reaching age 14, and replacement of an obsolete card. Read every option before choosing.
3. Decide whether to file online or by mail
- Online: create or sign in to a USCIS online account, complete the available I-90 workflow, upload evidence, pay the required fee, and retain the electronic confirmation.
- By mail: download the accepted edition, complete every applicable field, sign it, assemble evidence and payment, and use the current mailing address on the official page.
- Fee waiver: follow the paper-filing rules. USCIS states that an I-90 applicant requesting a fee waiver cannot file the form online.
4. Complete identity and immigration information
Use the legal name and identifying information that match USCIS records unless the filing requests a supported correction or legal change. Enter the A-Number, USCIS online account number when applicable, mailing and physical addresses, class of admission, date of admission or adjustment, and card information accurately.
5. Attach evidence for the selected reason
- Copy of the existing Green Card, front and back, when available.
- Government-issued identification when the card was lost, stolen, or destroyed.
- Marriage certificate, court order, divorce decree, adoption document, or other legal proof for a name change, as applicable.
- Evidence that the information provided to USCIS was correct if the issued card contains a USCIS error.
- Prior approval or notice information when a card should have been produced but was not received.
Use the current instructions for the exact category. Do not mail an original document unless USCIS specifically requests it.
6. Calculate the current fee
Use the USCIS Fee Calculator and Form G-1055. Do not copy a fee from an older version of the form or a third-party website. Confirm the accepted payment method for online or paper filing. If seeking a fee waiver, review Form I-912 and include the required evidence of inability to pay.
7. Sign and submit
An unsigned paper form can be rejected. Review dates, category, address, evidence, payment, and the current lockbox address before mailing. Use a trackable delivery method and retain a complete copy. Online filers should save the final submission and payment confirmation.
8. Follow notices and appointments
USCIS sends a receipt notice and may schedule biometrics, reuse eligible biometrics or a photograph, request additional evidence, or ask for an interview. Follow each notice exactly. Use the receipt number to track the case and keep your address current.
9. Protect temporary proof
For a qualifying renewal, keep the expired card together with the I-797 receipt notice that states the extension period. If the card is unavailable or the extension does not cover the need, contact USCIS about temporary evidence of status before employment verification, international travel, or another time-sensitive transaction.
