Eligible U.S. citizens and non-citizen U.S. nationals may renew online for routine service. Online renewal is not available when you need expedited processing or fail any eligibility requirement.
You must meet all of these conditions
- Your most recent passport was valid for 10 years.
- It expires within one year or expired less than five years ago.
- You are age 25 or older.
- You are not changing personal information such as your name or sex.
- You are not traveling internationally for at least six weeks after submitting.
- You are in a U.S. state or territory when you submit.
- You have the passport, it is not damaged or mutilated, and it has not been reported lost or stolen.
What changes after submission
The Department of State cancels the passport being renewed after you submit, so do not use it for international travel. Keep the physical passport; online applicants do not mail it with the application.
When to use another route
- Renew by mail if you meet the DS-82 rules but need an option not supported online.
- Apply in person with Form DS-11 when the previous passport or your circumstances do not qualify for renewal.
- Use the faster-service guidance when travel is too soon for routine online renewal.
Use only the official site
Complete your own application at the official Department of State website ending in .gov. Private companies cannot submit the online renewal for you and may charge extra fees or expose personal information.
