Get an IRS tax transcript

Choose the right IRS transcript and request it through the fastest official channel available for your tax year.

Transcripts are generally free

Use an IRS transcript when a lender, school, benefits program, or tax preparer needs tax information but not an exact photocopy of the return and attachments.

Choose the record that matches the request

The IRS offers tax return, tax account, record of account, wage and income, and verification of non-filing transcripts. They show different information, so ask the receiving organization which type and tax year it accepts.

Ways to get a transcript

  1. Use your IRS Individual Online Account to view, print, or download available transcripts.
  2. Order a tax return or tax account transcript by mail or through the automated telephone service when eligible.
  3. Submit Form 4506-T when you need another transcript type, an older year, or a request that the self-service options cannot complete.

Protect your information

IRS transcripts mask part of personally identifiable information while keeping financial figures visible. Send a transcript only through a channel you trust and confirm whether the recipient needs a customer file number.
