Read the remand instructions first
The Board decision identifies each remanded issue and the work VA must complete. A remand may require VA to obtain records, request an opinion, schedule an examination, or correct another error. It does not finally grant or deny the remanded issue.
Respond when VA contacts you
VA may send a letter requesting information or schedule an examination. Follow the instructions and deadline in that notice. Tell VA promptly if you cannot attend an examination, and keep your mailing address, phone number, and email current. Save the Board decision and every later notice.
For a modernized appeal
VA says that after it gathers the requested information and completes the remand actions, it makes a new decision. The appeal does not automatically return to the Board. The new decision letter explains the result and the review options and deadlines that apply.
For a legacy appeal
After completing the remand actions, the responsible VA office reviews the issue again. If it cannot fully grant the benefit, it may issue a Supplemental Statement of the Case. VA then returns the legacy appeal to the Board for a final decision.
Do not choose the next review route early
A remand is not itself a final denial of the remanded issue. Wait for the appropriate VA notice, then use the review rights printed in that notice. Do not assume that a new Supplemental Claim, Higher-Level Review, Board Appeal, or court appeal is due merely because the Board issued a remand.

Use VA’s official claim and appeal status tool for available updates. A VA-accredited Veterans Service Organization representative, attorney, or claims agent can review the remand instructions and help respond. Verify accreditation before sharing records.
