A request for more information is not necessarily a denial. Passport Services pauses or delays processing while it waits for the missing item. Follow the individualized request rather than a generic mailing address.
Confirm that the message is genuine
Compare the message with the status shown through the official Department of State service. A legitimate request identifies the application, the missing information, a due date, and response instructions. Do not send personal records to an address or link from an unexpected message without confirming it through Travel.State.Gov or the National Passport Information Center.
Use the deadline in the request
The Department of State’s current public guidance says requested information must be provided within 90 days of the date shown on its letter. Treat the specific due date in your communication as controlling and respond sooner when possible.
Send only through the instructed channel
The letter may direct a response by mail and provides the full destination. Some cases permit an email response, but only when the Department of State communication says so. Include the letter when instructed and use the application number on correspondence.
Correct the exact problem
Requests can concern a signature, photo, fee, previous passport, citizenship evidence, identification, name evidence, or another application item. If Passport Services sends a special questionnaire or form, use the version and instructions supplied or linked in the request. Do not substitute a different form because it appears similar.
Keep proof and monitor the status
Keep the request, a complete copy of the response, and delivery or submission proof. Passport Services uses an Additional Information Needed update when it sends a request and an Information Received, In Process Again update after receiving the response. Continue monitoring the official status service and your contact channels.
When individual help is needed
Call the National Passport Information Center using the number on the official contact page if the request is unclear, the deadline is near, the requested record is unavailable, or urgent international travel is approaching. Do not email the general feedback address for an application status or travel emergency.
