A SNAP fair hearing is the formal state process for asking an impartial hearing official to review a decision or action affecting a household’s SNAP case. It is not a new application and it is not decided by WhatDoIFile.

Audiencia imparcial de SNAP is a clear general translation. A state may use audiencia justa, audiencia administrativa, apelación, or another official label. Follow the name and filing instructions on the state notice.
When the term appears
The term commonly appears after an application denial, reduction or termination of benefits, disagreement with the current allotment, agency delay, or another state action affecting participation.
Practical example
A state notice says a household’s monthly SNAP allotment will decrease because of income information. The household believes the state used income that ended. The household requests a fair hearing, asks whether benefits will continue, obtains the calculation and case file, and presents proof of the income change.
Fair hearing versus agency conference
An agency conference is an optional informal discussion that may resolve a problem. It does not replace or delay the fair-hearing process, and the hearing remains scheduled unless the household withdraws it under the state’s allowed procedure.
Fair hearing versus administrative disqualification hearing
A fair hearing reviews a household’s disagreement with an eligibility or benefit action. An administrative disqualification hearing addresses an allegation of an intentional program violation and follows additional rules. Do not assume the same notice, deadline, or consequences apply.
