What SNAP does
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides food benefits to eligible households with low income. States administer applications under federal rules, so names, portals, document requests, and local procedures can differ.
How the application usually works
- Find the SNAP agency for the state where you currently live.
- Submit the state application online, in person, by mail, or by another method the state offers.
- Complete an eligibility interview, usually by telephone or in person.
- Provide requested verification of household, income, expenses, identity, and other relevant facts.
- Read the eligibility notice and follow instructions for using or maintaining benefits.
Do not rely on a national income number alone
