Do not ignore the notice
An overpayment notice explains the amount, reason, recovery plan, and review rights. Use the notice and official SSA pages; never upload the notice or financial records to WhatDoIFile.
Notice review
- Notice date and date received recorded.
- Benefit type identified: retirement, disability, survivor, family, or SSI.
- Overpayment period, amount, and reason compared with personal records.
- Collection start date and proposed withholding identified.
- Appeal and waiver instructions copied or saved.
Choose the response
- Reconsideration selected if the overpayment or amount appears wrong.
- Waiver selected if the overpayment was not your fault and repayment would cause hardship or be unfair.
- Both considered when the cause is unclear.
- Lower recovery rate selected only when you agree with the debt but need smaller payments.
- Repayment selected only after confirming the notice and official payment instructions.
Deadline check
- General 60-day appeal deadline calculated from receipt of the notice.
- First 30 days treated as urgent because a timely appeal or waiver can pause collection.
- Waiver noted as having no filing time limit, without delaying unnecessarily.
- Any different date printed on the notice reviewed.
Waiver preparation
- Current SSA-632-BK edition confirmed: 06-2025.
- Explanation of why the overpayment was not your fault prepared.
- Hardship or unfairness explanation prepared.
- Recent income, account, housing, utility, medical, debt, and expense records gathered when requested.
- Proof of SSI, TANF, needs-based VA pension, SNAP, or Extra Help gathered if the form's shortened route applies.
Submission and follow-up
- Official online, fax, mail, telephone, or appointment channel used.
- Copy of every form and attachment saved.
- Upload, fax, mailing, or call proof saved.
- SSA decision notice read and stored.
- Reconsideration or hearing rights reviewed if a waiver is denied.
