File an initial unemployment claim

Use the official unemployment agency for the state where you worked and provide complete information about your recent employers and job separation.

Do not use an unofficial application service

State unemployment agencies do not require a private company to submit your claim. Start from the Department of Labor’s state finder.

Before you file

  • Confirm the state where the work was physically performed.
  • Gather your Social Security number or other identifier accepted by the state.
  • List recent employers, work dates, addresses, and earnings information.
  • Prepare a clear explanation of why each job ended.
  • Have contact and direct-deposit information available if the state requests it.

Submit the initial claim

  1. Open the official state agency link from the federal finder.
  2. Create the required state account and complete identity verification.
  3. Answer every question accurately; estimates can delay the wage or separation review.
  4. Save the confirmation number and a copy of the submission.
  5. Check the state portal and mail for determinations or requests.

After filing

An initial application is not the same as a weekly payment request. Follow the state’s instructions for weekly or biweekly certifications, work-search reporting, and reporting earnings. Missing a certification can delay or prevent payment.
