There is no single federal application for every household. USDA’s directory links to state SNAP websites, applications, and local offices.
Before you file
- Confirm the state where the household currently lives.
- List the people who buy and prepare food together as required by the application.
- Gather identity, income, expense, and immigration-status information that applies to the people requesting benefits.
- Use a secure mailing address, telephone number, and email you can monitor.
Submit and preserve the filing date
Follow the state’s instructions for online, in-person, mail, fax, or other available filing. Keep the confirmation number, a copy of the application, and proof of when it was submitted. USDA explains that, if approved, benefits are generally based on the date the application was filed.
Complete the interview and verification
The state normally conducts an eligibility interview and may ask for documents or other verification. Respond by the deadline in the notice. Tell the agency promptly when you cannot obtain a requested item or need an accommodation or interpreter.
After the decision
Read the approval or denial notice carefully. Approved households receive instructions for the EBT card, benefit use, reporting changes, and recertification. Appeal rights and deadlines should appear in an adverse notice.
