SSA's 2026 SSI guide limits the complete online SSI route to people who meet every listed condition. Other applicants should use SSA's application page and arrange a telephone or local-office appointment.
Who may complete SSI online
SSA's current 2026 guide says the online SSI route is available when the applicant is also applying for Social Security disability benefits and meets all of these conditions:
- between age 18 and 64 years and 10 months;
- never married;
- alleging a disability;
- residing in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands; and
- has not applied for or received SSI in the past.
What happens if you do not meet every condition
Use SSA's official SSI application page, which asks who is applying and directs the person to the appropriate next step. SSA's guide says applicants who do not meet all online requirements need to contact the agency by phone. A local Social Security office can arrange a telephone appointment.
Applications for children
A parent or other responsible person can complete the Child Disability Report online, but SSA says a child's SSI claim cannot currently be completed entirely online. Follow the instructions after submitting the report and keep the appointment SSA schedules.
After the online portion
Finishing the online application does not necessarily finish every part of the SSI claim. An SSA representative may contact the applicant for more information, documents, or an interview. Save the confirmation and respond only through official SSA channels.
Recommended action
- Open the official SSI application page.
- Answer the routing questions accurately.
- Use the online disability application only when SSA offers that route.
- Arrange a phone or office appointment when the online route is not available.
- Do not send sensitive information to WhatDoIFile.
