WIC and SNAP have different purposes, eligible groups, application systems, and benefit rules. Receiving one is not, by itself, a reason to avoid applying for the other.
Why the eligibility decisions differ
SNAP generally evaluates the household under the state’s SNAP rules. WIC focuses on eligible pregnant or postpartum applicants, infants, and children younger than five and also requires a nutrition-risk determination.
Participation may simplify part of the WIC review
Under federal WIC rules, participation in Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF can sometimes support income eligibility. The WIC agency still must confirm the remaining requirements and make its own decision.
Apply to each program separately
Do not assume that approval for SNAP automatically enrolls anyone in WIC. Contact the WIC agency serving your location and follow its application and certification process.
