Apply for WIC benefits

Contact the WIC agency serving the place where you live. The agency will screen category, residence, income, and nutrition-risk requirements and explain its local application process.

Start with the WIC agency for your location

WIC is federally funded but administered through state, territory, and tribal agencies. Use the USDA locator rather than assuming that a neighboring jurisdiction uses the same application.

Who WIC serves

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children provides supplemental foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals. It serves eligible people who are pregnant, recently pregnant, or breastfeeding, and infants and children younger than five.

Four parts of eligibility

  • Category: the applicant must fit one of the program categories.
  • Residence: the applicant must live in the area served by the WIC agency; a minimum length of residence is not generally required.
  • Income: the agency applies current income rules and may use participation in programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF when allowed.
  • Nutrition risk: a qualified professional determines nutrition risk through the certification process.

How the process usually works

  1. Find the state, territory, or tribal WIC agency serving your residence.
  2. Contact that agency or a local clinic and ask how to start the application.
  3. Provide the information and documents the agency requests.
  4. Complete the certification appointment or interview and nutrition assessment.
  5. Read the eligibility decision and instructions for benefits, approved foods, appointments, and recertification.

Do not use a national checklist as a substitute

Application channels, appointment formats, accepted proof, benefit delivery, and local clinic procedures can differ. The local agency’s current instructions control.
