Identify or submit relevant new evidence, but do not wait for every record before filing the appeal. Submit the reconsideration request within the period stated in the notice and tell SSA about evidence that will follow.
What may be relevant
For a disability appeal, updates may include new treatment, tests, diagnoses, medicines, providers, changes in symptoms or daily activities, and changes in work. Explain how an item relates to the period and issues SSA is reviewing instead of sending unrelated records.
If the evidence is not ready
- File the reconsideration request through the official SSA channel shown in the notice.
- State that additional evidence exists or is expected and identify the source when possible.
- Follow the appeal instructions for uploading or sending records and use the cover sheet SSA provides when applicable.
- Respond by the date in any later evidence request. SSA's electronic-appeal terms explain that it may begin processing without requested evidence if it is not received within the period specified in that request.
- Keep the submission confirmation and a copy or list of everything provided.
Who reviews it
For a medical disability reconsideration, an examiner at the state Disability Determination Services office reviews the original application and the reconsideration record. A non-medical reconsideration follows a different SSA review route. Read the notice so you select the correct appeal type.
When individual help matters
If evidence is difficult to obtain, the deadline may have passed, benefits may stop, or the record involves a complex legal issue, contact SSA promptly and consider help from an attorney or other qualified representative. WhatDoIFile does not determine which evidence proves an individual claim.
